What this site records, what it does not, and who else sees any of it.
The short version
We are a two-person operation selling one product. We do not run an analytics product, we do not use tracking cookies, and we have nothing to sell to an advertiser. What follows is the long version, written so you can check it.
Getting in touch
The home page lists an email address and a phone number. Both are plain links: tapping them opens your own mail app or your own phone. Nothing is sent to us and nothing is recorded by tapping one.
When you do write to us, we keep the email. It sits in an ordinary mailbox and we read it. We do not add you to a list and there is no list to add you to.
The setup form
There is one form on this site. It is the new store setup page at /setup, and only a store signing up fills it in. It takes the store's own details and the files a store chooses to upload. Those go to our own storage and nowhere else.
What happens to a store's data after that is the subject of a separate document, because it is a promise rather than a notice: How we handle your data. If you run a store, that is the page that binds us, and this one does not change it.
What is recorded when you open a page here
One row, per day, per visitor, per page. Here is exactly what is in it.
The row holds the date, a scrambled visitor code, which page you opened, and where you came from if a link sent you. It also holds the time that visitor code was first seen that day.
The visitor code
It is built from your network address, your browser's description of itself, and today's date, run through a one-way scramble. Two things follow from that, and both are the point:
- Your network address and your browser description are never written down. They go into the scramble and they do not come out.
- Because today's date goes in as well, the code you get today is a different code tomorrow. Nothing here can follow one person from one day to the next, and that is deliberate.
Where you came from
If another site linked you here, we keep the site and the page. We drop everything after the question mark, which is where search terms and campaign codes live. We are not interested in them and storing them would mean holding another site's business in our table.
What is not recorded
Requests for files rather than pages are skipped, so stylesheets, images and fonts are not counted. So are the addresses that automated scanners try every day at every domain.
How long we keep it. 90 days. Rows older than that are deleted automatically, once a day, by the site itself. Nothing is archived first and there is no copy kept anywhere else. If you want a row gone sooner, write to us and we will delete it.
Cookies
This site sets exactly one cookie, and it is not for you. It is called
bl_own, the owner sets it on his own browser on purpose, and its
only job is to keep his own visits out of the count above. It lasts
two years. There is no advertising cookie, no analytics cookie, and no third
party setting anything through us.
The accounting app at /books keeps your sign-in on your own device so you are not asked for a PIN on every screen. That never leaves your browser.
The outside services involved
Three, and this is the whole list for the public site:
- Cloudflare serves these pages and holds the storage behind them. Running a website means somebody serves it, and they see the traffic that any host sees.
- Resend sends the email this site sends, such as a copy of a document you asked for.
- Slack receives one private message a day, to the owner, carrying the counts described above and nothing else.
Nobody else receives anything. We do not sell, rent or share what is on this page with anyone, and there is no arrangement under which we could.
Children
This is a product sold to restaurant operators. It is not meant for children and nothing here is aimed at them.
Asking us about your data
Write to matt@backline-ops.com. Ask what we hold, ask for it back, or ask us to delete it. A real person reads it and answers. If you run a store on the Hub, the same address does the same job, and the agreement says what we owe you.
Changes to this page
If what the site does changes, this page changes with it. It carries the date it was last checked against the code rather than a promise to review it on a schedule, because a date nobody keeps is worse than no date.
